People pursue counseling and therapy for a variety of reasons. Some may enter therapy to address major life changes such as divorce or the loss of a loved one.
Others may seek help in managing mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Many people seek counseling because they have identified specific goals or issues that they wish to work on. In many cases, the client and I will explore much more than just the client's presenting problem, the issue that first brought the person
to therapy.
Young adults today face unique challenges. With pressures from social media, friendship and relationship issues and academic/new career stressors, today’s young adults can benefit from non-judgmental support and care to help navigate the transition into adulthood. During these formative years, it is important to learn healthy coping skills and to build positive relationships with peers, family, and self. This is especially true when young adults experience mental health concerns or other difficulties as they become accustomed to new expectations, roles, and responsibilities.
In recent decades, researchers have been gaining insight into the benefits of practicing mindfulness. By studying mindfulness meditation, they’ve found that learning to pay
attention to our current experiences and accepting them without judgment might indeed help us to be happier. Studies to date suggest that mindfulness affects many aspects of our psychological well-being: improving mood , increasing positive emotions, and decreasing anxiety, emotional reactivity, and job burnout. I facilitate mindfulness workshops in hospitals, outpatient groups, recovery centers, LGBTQ groups and college student wellness programs.
There's a reason that taking a walk clears your head. Walking increases creativity, creates new neural connections and improves mood. Walking is literally the act of moving forward, of pushing through difficulty, getting "unstuck and becoming more aware of your surroundings. The best kind of therapy has the same effect, so they're a natural fit. Walk and talk therapy gets you off the couch and back in touch with yourself and the world around you.
The first step in therapy is talking. Let's find a time where we can meet and talk about what's on your mind.
